Introduction:
Agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy. It accounts for 19% of GDP and earns 80% of the country’s total export earnings, including agricultural products. This sector employs over 42.3% of the workforce.
Punjab, the most populous province, contributes the most to the country’s agricultural output. Agriculture contributes 19% to GDP and employs 48% of the population. It helps in providing raw materials for large scale industry. Textile, leather, rice processing, edible oil, sugar and various food industries. Agriculture accounts for three-quarters of Pakistan’s total exports and 60% of these come from Punjab. Punjab has been struggling to deal with food security challenges for years.
Punjab became the second largest province producing 25.9% of its total area. Land use status 86% of total area; While 14% of land is not reported. Another 14% of the area cannot be fully cultivated or is occupied by infrastructure, leaving only 72% of the area available for cultivation. 10.81 million ha (53%) is net plantation area. An area that is cultivated at least once a year. 9% of the land is classified as current pasture. According to the 2016-17 Agricultural Census, there are 5,249,800 farms in Punjab, and these farms mainly consist of very small farms. 42% of the fields are less than one hectare. Forests ranging from one to 10 hectares accounted for more than half of the total forests and 68.9% of the total area. Farms of 10 ha and above account for 22.2% of the total cultivated area.
The total area of Punjab is 16.68 million hectares. It showed that 5.87 million hectares were planted more than once during the year. In 2018-19, wheat accounted for 40 per cent of the country, occupying 11.5 per cent of rice and 12.8 per cent of total cultivated area in Punjab.
4.2% and 4.8% of the area is covered by maize and sugarcane respectively, while 11% of the area is acquired for fodder to meet the needs of the agricultural population of the province. Oilseeds, cans and vegetables were grown in only 12% of the area.
The mission aims to maintain food security and support the national economy, make agriculture cost-effective and knowledge-based, emphasize farmer welfare and maintain productivity.
